About Karen Thomas Olsen

Born and raised in Ohio, I attended college and graduate school in Indiana, moved to Scotts Valley, California south of San Jose to teach, back to Ohio for many years, to Arizona for 11 years with my husband, and finally to Ft. Wayne, Indiana to be near family. (Leaving Prescott Valley, Arizona in 2018 was very hard. Sigh. But for family? Worth it.) I have taught in three Christian high schools and one community college. My first teaching position was in Scotts Valley, California. In the summer of 1980, a tall, dark, and handsome 26 year old California boy, who had recently completed his degree in Aeronautical Operations from San Jose State University, followed me to Columbus, Ohio where I had accepted a new teaching position at Worthington Christian High School. There in Worthington we were married. Paul became an Air Traffic Controller, and we raised two beautiful girls in Piqua and Troy, Ohio. We now also have a son-in-law and two precious grandsons born in 2009 and 2012. In 2007, Lockheed Martin transferred my husband to Prescott Valley, Arizona, which was a great adventure for us. Arizona was a good place for my health and great for Paul, a California boy who loves the sunny southwest! However, being far from family is not easy. So, in July of 2018 we moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where we are near relatives and just hours from each of our daughters, one near Chicago and one north of Cincinnati. For years, I worked in Christian school curriculum design and development, which was challenging, exciting, and satisfying. After retiring in the summer of 2012, I focused on completing a doctorate, pursuing some writing projects, and being involved in Christian education at our church. Maintaining this blog continues to be important to me. With great gratitude to the Lord who carried me through the process, I graduated from Trinity Theological Seminary in August, 2016, earning a DRS (Doctor of Religious Studies) with an emphasis in theology. My dissertation is entitled "A Taxonomic Theology of Suffering and Joy Designed to Assist in Christian Growth." Besides reading, learning, teaching, and writing, I love to swim, stroll around the neighborhood on my bike, take Water Aerobics classes, mingle with neighbors, and participate in our local church. As my health permits, I love to travel and see God’s amazing creation. I’m wearing my eye glasses or “life lenses” which instruct me to “Look for the Lord in every page of Scripture, in every corner of nature, and in every chapter of my life." No matter the direction of my life, it's a journey north.

Where Will this Stream Take Us?

Sarah is no longer in the cookie business (note last post), but from those skills and others she learned at home and in school, Sarah was able to launch her own web design company while she was still in college.  It helped to support her for a number of years, and then Continue reading

Sarah’s Cookie Initiative

Sarah grew up in a home where her parents did not provide allowances for their children.  If she wanted her own money, she had to earn it.  She could not earn money by completing basic or required chores.  Her parents saw participation in the home as a part of belonging to the family. She was taught Continue reading

The “Heart Work” of Character

If character is the expression of who we really are, then character is “heart work.”

Character formation is an inside job with an outside exposure.

One of our teachers expressed to me that many of our children choose to disobey school and class rules because “their own will is more important than the consequence.”  This demonstrates Continue reading

What Do You Need in Order to Obey?

What do you need in order to obey?  In my last post, I suggested that sometimes courage is needed. Obeying always involves thinking, choosing, and following through.  As a child, I loved my parents and teachers and did not question authority. Pleasing them was important to me. As a compliant child, maybe I didn’t need as much courage in order to obey as a stronger willed child might need. I have noted Continue reading

Singing Along — On the Obedience Train

What character qualities are riding along on the obedience train, singing in harmony?  I’m rather embarrassed to tell you how many, in my opinion, of our 57 character qualities fit on this train.  I went down the list and checked off 19!  I must lack discernment or judgment!  But then, maybe there is something to this!  In our last post, I said that love is the entire enchilada – all 57 qualities rolled into one, describing the perfections of Christ.  Obedience as a subset of love also has its entourage. Remember Continue reading

Obedience is the Very Best Way to Show…

When our children were young, my sister introduced her family and mine to a song called, “Obedience is the Very Best Way to Show that You Believe.”  I especially remember my little niece, Elisa, singing this and other songs she learned from her mother.  Elisa was a cuddly, curly haired girl with a surprisingly low and scratchy voice.  She sang swaying back and forth on each foot, singing in her raspy voice.  It was so humorous and darling.  I have a recording of her singing, “My God is So Big” when she was 2 1/2.  When she was a few years older, she sang this song— “Obedience is the very best way…”  Continue reading

Encore: Invitation to Meander

I want to invite you to add Journey North Character to your  bookmarks.  Also, you can sign up at the bottom of this page to be notified of new posts.  You can invite your friends and relatives to visit our blog by forwarding a post or just directing them to find us on the Troychristianschools.org website. I’d love to have some grandparents of TCS kids join us!  As you read a post, you may think of someone this may encourage, so forward it to him or her! The blog may be a way to share the Lord and even our school with others.

We’ve only been around a few months, but we’ve covered some territory: deep thoughts of a two and a four year old, spiritual sensitivity to the Lord, relationships, the pale blue dot, agape love which is wise and strong, two kinds of blessings, a martyred Valentinus, and well, you discover! I’m not going to meander down a thematic avenue today.  Instead, I want to invite you to Continue reading

A Blessed St. Valentine’s Day to You!!

I’ve heard a number of people say that Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and many of these kinds of holidays are just “Hallmark” inventions for commercial purposes.  Actually, history reveals that St. Valentine’s Day goes back to Roman paganism and early church history.  Much is obscured in legend, but part of the story is attached to Christian martyrdom in the third century. We don’t associate religious persecution with Valentine’s Day, but there is an early connection. Continue reading

At The Heart Of Love Is “Blessing”

I used to think that the words ‘blessed” and “blessing”  were  insipid, anemic, nebulous words.  Like soft Jello, lacking shape and substance.  That was before I started to study the words!  Word studies enrich your mind and life! They will change your perspective on reality, because they open mental windows!

“Blessing” is at the heart of what it means to be loved by God and for us to love others. “Makarios” is one Greek word translated “blessed one.” It means possessing the favor of God. More specifically, “The believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit because of Christ and as a result should be fully satisfied no matter the circumstances.” [1]  Continue reading

Devoted To The Pale Blue Dot

“The Pale Blue Dot” is the title of a famous photograph taken of planet earth in 1990 by the Voyager I spacecraft from a distance of more than 3. 7 billion miles away.  Earth appears to be nothing more than “a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam,” wrote Carl Sagan in response to the picture. [1]

“When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers,” responds David, employing only his naked eyes tilted upward, “What is man that thou art mindful of him?  Or the son of man that thou does care for him? ” [2] Continue reading
