On Reading Aloud

Do you like to have someone read to you? Do you like to read aloud for others?

Paul is reading aloud to me a series that we’ve read numerous times. We’ve read this series on our own. We’ve read these books to our children. We’ve read them to our grandchildren. Why read them again? And why now?

Again? Because these stories engage our minds and comfort our spirits. Now? Because as my health has further limited me this year, Paul and I are further limited in our ability to do things together that would be either normal or desirable for a couple to do together. Paul is very physically active and I am not. Reading aloud offers a pleasant experience we can share together.

Paul is reading The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis to me.Paul reading to his wife. We are finishing tonight our fourth book, Prince Caspian. Reliving the Narnia stories takes us on adventures that cost little physical energy. Attention is needed, which does require some energy, and attention opens the mental door of imagination. Even at the age of 70, we imbibe biblical and virtuous lessons from these tales. We smile, laugh, and discuss.

Oh, did I write 70?

Today Paul turns 71!

Happy Birthday, my Sweetheart!

Epiphany: Such Glorious Radiance and Representation

“What an epiphany!” I exclaim when something strikes me as a profound realization. I see it! I’m enlightened. This is how we tend to use the word, epiphany. Yet, note its beautiful and ancient usage as the name for the twelfth day of Christmas. Epiphany: every January 6, the celebration the coming of the Magi to see the Christ child. Epiphany: the incarnation and manifestation of Christ to the world. Christ, the Light of the world. A-ha!

Therefore, today is an appropriate day to bring to light an essay I wrote last year that has been hidden in my Word documents, unused.

This essay presents some themes, quotations, and insights developed in my unpublished Bible study, which I am re-writing as a book to be published later this year. (If you’ve been with me for years, you’ll recognize certain themes.) I’ll be writing more in coming posts about my new adventure, working with a publisher.

For now, I’ll bring to light some thoughts I’ve pondered about our glorious Savior and the radiance of His Epiphany.

Such Glorious Radiance and Representation

When we look at Jesus, we see no strong points. None. What?

Within My Wardrobe

Within the wardrobe of my heart, I can be close to God.  Over time He changes me, transforming me to be more like Jesus. In my last post, I wrote of Lucy and the Wardrobe she entered that changed her life. We read Rev. 3:20 in which Jesus invites Himself into our inner world to live with us. I also introduced you to Ruth Myers little prayer book.* Here is her “most basic act of worship” prayer: Continue reading

The Other Side of the Door

You remember that Lucy thought it would be worthwhile (though her siblings did not) to try the door of the big wardrobe which was in an otherwise empty room in the professor’s sprawling country residence in England. I’m referring to C.S. Lewis’ book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The four children were exploring the house on a rainy day. However, it was Lucy’s sense that the wardrobe was worthy of exploration that changed her life as well as her sibling’s lives. Young Lucy was given wonder-filled uncommon sense. Continue reading
